Main purpose of the position

To carry out construction, maintenance and repair on both live and dead Transmission and Distribution overhead lines to ensure efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of standard tests that require moderate judgment.
  • Availability of serviceable line maintenance tools and well-maintained line servitudes.
  • Carry out inspections, records and submit them to the Lines Foreman for scheduling and filing
  • Adheres to live line work procedures and reports shortcomings.
  • Issues, receives, clears and cancels live line work certificates and ensure that all conditions for live line maintenance are met before and during live line and deadline work.
  • Identify shortcoming in the live line work and come up with improvement plans.
  • Perform live line work maintenance to ensure efficient and reliable transmission of electricity without switching off consumers and not affecting BPC revenue.
  • Performs standard installation, maintenance, and repair activities under detailed guidance.
  • Troubleshoots basic technical and/or operational problems by applying previously defined matching solutions.
  • Carries out repairs on dead/live 66 to 400KV transmission lines to ensure personnel, environment and public safety as well as security of electricity supply.
  • Patrols and inspects Transmission and Distribution Lines to locate faults and defects and compile reports to enable effective and timeous maintenance.
  • Carries out servitude maintenance under transmission lines to create safe working environment and enhance reliability of lines and ensure lines are free from obstacles.
  • Maintains overhead bus-bars, by-pass isolators, and insulators to ensure efficient transmission of electricity.
  • Maintains, repairs and tests transmission tools periodically for safe use.
  • Support Telecommunication personnel  when doing maintenance on height activities.
  • Support Projects team during pre commissioning by doing tower to tower inspection before project handover.
  • Operates various machines, adjusting work sequence and/or other variables to improve efficiency.
  • Inspects test equipment for correct operation and accurate and reliable test results.
  • Assess the condition and checks the inventory of all tools and equipment and recommends replacement or repair.
  • Recommends test equipment for maintenance and calibration.
  • Refurbishs (reconditions) of live line work tools to conform to standard
  • Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.
  • Complies with safety standards pertaining to line maintenance work at all times to ensure safety of employees, equipment, the public and the environment.
  • Carries out housekeeping in live line inventory storerooms, vehicles and lines in accordance with BPC SHER standards and live line procedures.

Qualifications

  • National Craft Certificate in Electrical Engineering
  • Live Line Certificate would be added advantage
  • Junior Authorisation would be an added advantage
