Main purpose of the position

To install, commission, maintain, test and operate transmission and distribution power equipment in accordance with equipment design, operations standards and maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability and availability.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises the activities of the team to ensure that operational systems, procedures, and safety standards are observed at all times.
  • Issues and cancels safety documents to facilitate work on transmission facilities.
  • Complete all received job cards, inspection sheets and schedules and return them to Network Maintenance Planning Section
  • Carries out network switching for isolation and restoration for power supply in accordance with BPC safety procedures to ensure safe working environment.
  • Ascertains that all tests information such as alarms, status, etc. Is correctly received in the control room/NCC and takes remedial action on incorrect information.
  • Performs after hours standby duties and should be senior authorised to switch and issue all safety documentation on all transmission and distribution LV/HV equipment in his/ her area.
  • Inputs on Sectional budget
  • Carries out tests on Transmission and Distribution equipment to ensure conformity to set standards
  • Correct test procedures are done in accordance with Policies Standards and Procedures
  • Update and maintain database of equipment test results for records and trends
  • Analyse tests results and make recommendations for repairs or replacement to ensure equipment availability.
  • Responsible for the good condition of test lab and all test equipment by ensuring timely calibration of test equipment to ensure quality results
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment and systems for emergency repairs
  • Performs maintenance inspections, assists specialists in setting up and testing new products/processes.
  • Installs complex systems with guidance.
  • Prepares and submits operational and maintenance monthly reports to the Engineer Network Maintenance
  • Troubleshoots on transmission and distribution network equipment and takes remedial action.
  • Performs pre-commissioning inspections for new installations.
  • Implements the maintenance program by carrying out functional checks on substation equipment in accordance with set policies and procedures.
  • Carries out all HV equipment inspections to monitor and remedy the condition according to set policies and procedures.
  • Samples, tests, and analysis of transformer oil sampling to determine the condition of Oil to optimise equipment availability
  • Carries out operations, maintenance and testing properly in accordance with set policies and procedures that, restoration of equipment is completed within the prescribed times and material.
  • Proposes and applies remedial action (where possible) in substations in cases of non-conformance to specifications during commissioning
  • Collate and analyse data using pre-determined tools, methods and formats.
  • Carries out prescribed internal and external client management activities and provides support to others by following existing procedures.
  • Follows up of supplier payments with supply chain
  • Identifies shortcomings in existing maintenance processes and procedures and recommend improvements.
  • Supports implementation of project in area of responsibility to ensure compliance to existing standards.
  • Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Class B driver’s licence is required
  • Senior Authorisation is compulsory up to 66kV or 400kV
  • Professional Membership with the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required.

Experience

  • Five (5) years’ post qualification experience in a power environment, two (2) years of which should be at supervisory level.
