Main purpose of the position

To carry out installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, rectification/modification and commissioning of protection, control and monitoring equipment/schemes, to ensure accurate and reliable operation in the protection of the Transmission and Distribution network.

Job Responsibilities

  • Installs and commissions’ protection and control equipment in accordance with specifications and schematic diagrams.
  • Carries-out repair works and rectifies protection and control equipment defects to minimise equipment down time and ensure speedy restoration of supply.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance (primary injection tests, secondary injection tests, CT tests, VT tests and cleaning etc.) of protection and control equipment in accordance with laid down standard procedures.
  • Maintains an inventory of all protection and control equipment spares and ensures that required spares are ordered on time.
  • Conducts periodic inspection of protection equipment in substations and makes preliminary reports on the status of the protection and control gear.
  • Performs fault analysis and diagnosis to determine the nature and location of the faults
  • Ensures that test equipment is operational and correctly calibrated in order to maintain protection and control equipment accuracy and reliability.
  • Monitor small and medium scale projects as directed by Supervisor by working within an established project management plan.
  • Maintains systems documentation and drawings to ensure that they are up to date and in good order
  • Carries out power network switching operations in accordance with BPC safety procedures to ensure safe working environment.
  • Implement sectional budget & initiate cost saving measures in area of responsibility.
  • Motivates and disciplines of protection artisans in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives
  • Proposes and implements developmental plans for the protection artisans to ensure competent, efficient, and motivated staff
  • Trains technical personnel to ensure skills development and skills transfer for business continuity
  • Collects and collates disturbances records and settings from all Protection and control equipment for system performance monitoring and evaluation.
  • Compiles periodic systems performance reports in a rea of responsibility
  • Identifies protection and control equipment and assets and recommends for replacement and disposal
  • Prepares requisitions to purchase protection equipment and tool and make follow up on payments of suppliers with supply chain and finance departments
  • Schedules and supervises commissioning of customer backup power supplies
  • Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.
  • Promotes safety awareness in line with SHER requirements through periodic audits.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Professional Technician Registration with Engineers Registration Board is required.
  • Class B Drivers Licence is required
  • Must obtain Senior Authorisation for both Transmission and Distribution (66 kV up to 400kV) within six (6) months for internal candidates and twelve (12) months for external candidates.

Experience

  • Four (4) years’ post qualification experience in a power system operations environment, one (1) year should have been in power system protection.
