The position is responsible for coordination and the design and implementation of a safety system of work and associated programmes, aligning them to Tshukudu Metals Botswana’s overall strategy and objectives, as well as best practices.
Key Performance Areas
- Key Performance Areas (KPAs):
- Develops programmes to create a positive safety culture across the workforce based on the TMB values
- Creates and maintains the TMB site risk register and associated risk review and management processes
- Develops, implements and reviews a safe system of work, including safety standards, policies, procedures and training processes in accordance with the industry standards and legal requirements.
- Works with contractor groups to create alignment with TMB health and safety standards, systems and culture
- Working with the site leadership team, ensures effective safety leadership, including field leadership and coaching of workers on safety
- Sets objectives and targets to manage Safety programmes and systems, to achieve TMB strategies and in line with approved policies and procedures
- Conducts risk impact analysis by evaluating standards, statistics and advises management on impact potential
- Coordinates all risk assessments, identifies hazards and associated potential perils at TMB
- Oversees commissioning of all TMB projects to ensure compliance with legal requirements and Safety standards
- Reviews contractors’ site rules and regulations manual, with a view to amend and up-date as needed
- Develops emergency preparedness plans for all possible risks, implements and evaluates the plan
- Develops and implements appropriate monitoring mechanisms such as inspections and audits,
- Safety Reporting – Prepares reports to the Executive, with detailed findings and recommendations in order to close deviations.

- Participate in site HSES-related and other activities, as required.
- Drive and promote a ‘Don’t Walk Past’ Safety Culture across site.
Technical Competencies
- Safety Awareness and Coordination
- Thorough understanding of SHE systems, best practices and principles
- Thorough understanding of Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act and any other legislations pertaining to Mining & Construction related operations
- Thorough understanding of Explosives Regulations
- Safety Training Management e.g. SAMTRAC
- Hazard Identification and Risk Management/Assessment skills
- Incident/Accident Investigation skills
- Knowledge and understanding of OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 & ISO 9001
- Substantial open-pit mine safety management experience
- Ability to interpret and apply Company policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Demonstrated experience in audit, risk assessments and incident investigations.
- System Analysis and Evaluation
- Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Qualification & Experience
- Degree in Safety Management or equivalent
- Valid Botswana class B driver’s license
- A minimum of 10 years’ working experience in Safety in Mining and Construction.
- Must have full knowledge of SHE integrated management systems (ISO 9001, OHSAS18001 & ISO14001).
- Computer Literacy.
- Certificates in Fire & First Aid
