Purpose of the Role
To manage technical investigations, research, development and conceptual design and feasibility of specific operational aspects initiatives to align with mining industry best practice.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Develops and implements the mining drilling and blasting strategy for the department to meet the operation’s medium and long term plans
- Analyses operational aspects and trends in the mining industry, assessing their possible impact on the mining strategy
- Investigates, designs and specifies optimal drilling and charging parameters e.g. blast hole size, drilling pattern and powder factors for the different rock types.
- Initiates and conducts research into new operational methods to enhance mining and downstream efficiencies in line with industry trends
- Initiates and conducts tests to develop the most appropriate perimeter blasting techniques in order to minimise damage to final pit walls by analysing vibration data and conferring with geotechnical personnel
- Assesses blast in terms of fragmentation diggability, backbreak, flyrock etc determines appropriate changes to blast designs by interpreting the impact of each design factor on the results.
- Researches on and coordinates the Mine-to-Mill activities in the Mining Discipline
- Manages and reviews the Charging and Blasting Contract to ensures the achievement of service level contract i.e. Monitoring of the Explosive supplier on their respective sites
- Develops and co-ordinates implementation of standards by liaising with other operations and suppliers nationally and internationally to ensure adoption of best practice in pit operations.
- Ensures compliance to statutory requirements as stipulated in the Mines, Quarries, Machinery Regulations and other statutory requirements by putting in place procedures and policies to be followed.
- Conducts audits on existing processes and procedures and recommends appropriate action for continuous improvement
- Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
Other Job Responsibilities
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives
- Manages subordinate’s key effectiveness area by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
- Coordinates & manages the Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility as well as compliance to the statutory requirements such as stipulated in the Mines, Works, Quarries and Machinery Act (MWQM)
- Identifies and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principles/requirements
- Oversees the implementation of the departmental talent management initiatives by ensuring the right competence and effectiveness of manpower (capacity building) through developing and implementing career, localization/succession, training and development
Education
- Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering
Experience
7 years post qualification mining experience with at least 2 years at Mining Engineer level in Drilling and Blasting
