Purpose of the Role

Senior Manager – Environment, Social and Governance Integration provides strategic direction for Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) integration input into the development of the Debswana sustainability/ESG strategy and good practise guidance to ensure an integrated, efficient and uniform approach of sustainability management in Debswana ensuring achievement of aligned to the sustainable development goals aspirations through an integrated operating model

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Guides the process for consolidation and integrated reporting of the ESG budget and expenditure requirement with input from Functional budgets
  • Developed the governance requirements and processes to direct the business on the process for the evolution and implementation of the Debswana Sustainability Strategy which addresses all the ESG requirements
  • Develops of standards, policies, and company procedures to ensure the cascading and integration of the sustainability/ESG Strategy into the business operations and functions
  • Project manage engagement with all Debswana functions, site teams on Sustainability /ESG strategy and oversee the process for development of five-year Sustainability Strategy operational plans for each part of the business, maximising synergies.
  • Establishes process for collaboration and partnership with the Safety and Sustainable Development, Corporate Affairs, Governance Risk and Compliance
  • Develops the process for the development of integrated functional and operational plans that incorporates in ESG Strategy ambitions
  • Management of the Sustainability improvement framework, and associated analysis of goal pathways and the maturity journey
  • Coordinates the Debswana non-financial materiality process in collaboration with Corporate Affairs function, managing consultant and internal and external stakeholder scope, to ensure value adding insights on current and emerging sustainability
  • Defines ESG risk management process in order to facilitate the identification, consolidation and reporting of risks
  • Proactive identification, consolidation and reporting the Debswana ESG risks and opportunities
  • Coordinates the consolidation of an ESG risk view, emerging risks, researched emerging risks in order to advise leadership on organisational positions
  • Facilitates the comprehensive risk mitigation for sustainability, with support from Governance, Risk and Compliance function and collaboration with Safety and Sustainable Development, Corporate Affairs, Governance Risk and Compliance
  • Develops the ESG Assurance Plan to improve compliance to ESG /sustainability standards, track and report on performance on Standards, Principles and other Industry Good Practice Standards
  • Develops/ identifies consolidated ESG key performance indicators, metrics and tracking achievement of Debswana ESG Strategy Goals in collaboration with Functional Heads across the ESG portfolio
  • Develops the Sustainability Value Approach for measurement of ESG impact in the business
  • Provides secretariat support to Sustainability governance structures and coordinate timely reporting into and Sustainability Committees
  • Develops and coordinates implementation of process for ESG standard adoption/adaption and compliance through appropriate governance forums
  • Manages baseline data, tracking of key performance indicators, systems, dashboards linked to Business Expectations and Critical Tasks to support achievement of the Sustainability goals in accordance to adopted Sustainability Standards
  • Leads the development of end state vision for Debswana external disclosure data, reporting and assurance needs, conduct gap analysis and develop roadmap to achieve end state including linked external assurance framework
  • Collaborates on the development of green credit / financing process with Finance function
  • Leads the alignment of external stakeholders and the business, working to ensure continued alignment with shareholder aspirations, stakeholder expectations and diamond industry material issues and consumer expectations
  • Leads and collaborates with cross functional teams to design and deliver sustainable solution and implement sustainability decisions, strategies and campaigns
  • Coordinates the Debswana functional teams in a structured and aligned approach to deliver in line with the ESG Strategy Operating Model Process and requirements
  • Works closely with Group Internal Communications on a strategic and multi-year employee engagement plan to ensure awareness of the Sustainability/ESG Strategy and its impacts
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with external key stakeholder and partners to ensure achievement of ESG business objectives
  • Advocates for local, regional and national policy review, adoption through appropriate fora to advance overall improvement of ESG
  • Collaborates on cross cutting performance areas across ESG goals to optimize integrated thinking and delivery
  • Drives and embeds leading thinking and good practice in ESG business integration
  • Develops process for and conduct good practice broad scanning activities, including legislative developments through analysis
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior in line with health and safety standards and with the Debswana values
  • Consistently apply SHE principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities
  • Participates in relevant SHE audits, inspections and observations, and address issues as part of demonstrating safety leadership

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Adheres to safety, health and environmental policies/ procedures in area of Compliance to SHE standards responsibility

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree Environmental/ Social /Sustainability Management or equivalent, post degree qualification is added advantage

Experience

  • 10 years post qualification experience, with 5 years management experience in sustainability at mining operations or comparable experience
  • Exposure to working with relevant Multi Lateral Agreements such as United National Sustainable Development Goals
  •  Experience with guiding and providing assurance on relevant ESG topics
  •  Experience with risk management processes and implementation
  •  Experience with development of governance and technical guiding documents
  • Good understanding of the full mine value chain is advantageous.
