JOB SUMMARY:
Provides direct patient care as well as assists Medical Doctors, Consultants and Specialist Nurses, in providing treatment to patients in assigned area, including monitoring, recording and reporting symptoms or changes in patient’s conditions. Directs other members of the healthcare team with respect to patient care (e.g., Healthcare Assistants, etc.) as required.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Effectiveness
- Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets.
Patient Care
- Consults patients, prescribes treatment within the scope of practice and or refers to relevant professionals when necessary
- Resuscitates patients accordingly e.g. inserts IV line, gives oxygen, etc and refers when necessary
- Orders investigations, interprets results, treats and refers to the doctor within scope of practice
- Formulates and implements individualised nursing care plans
- Gives immunization to patients as necessary
- Evaluates patient’s response to interventions, re-examines and takes appropriate actions within scope of practice
- Ensures patients have a dignified demise and provides last offices at the end of care
- Supports and works to restore the health and well-being of patients and performs independently or in cooperation with other members of the health team.
Information Management
- Clearly and accurately documents patient’s progress for use by relevant care givers
- Compiles various health statistics reports and submits to relevant authorities (e.g. midnight census,disease reports etc.)”
- Maintains unit consumables and equipment stock levels, and reports to the supervisor for action
- Records use of stock on charge sheets
- Provides advice and guidance to RPNs regarding patient care as well as standard/basic nursing practices and procedures, etc.
Patient Education
- Provides relevant information and counselling to clients on their conditions and treatment
- Ensures that patients, families and significant others are well informed and included in patient care planning
Risk Management
- Implements and manages the nursing care risk profile preventative programs
Safety, Health and Environment
- Coordinates and monitors the implementation of safety, health and environmental programs in area of responsibility taking cognisance of all legal requirements
Knowledge Management
- Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance”
- Focuses on self-development and enhancing own technical skill set with respect to nursing.
- Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance
People Management
- May coach/mentor less experienced nursing staff as well as Healthcare Assistants
- Interacts with other team members, multi-disciplinary teams regarding patient care.
- Interacts with patients and care givers / families communicating patient-related information.
Client Relationships
- Establishes and maintains Business Partner relationships with all key stakeholders to facilitate the optimal functioning of the nursing section

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma in Nursing
Experience:
• 5 years post qualification experience in nursing
• Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana
