Purpose of the Role
To Manage the Mining operations and maintenance functions and ensure implementation of objectives within the framework of the department’s strategic plan, legal requirements and best mining engineering principles.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Interprets operational requirements and integrates with discipline base financial needs to ensure availability of financial resources to meet business objectives
- Responsible for, approves and monitors the utilisation of allocated funds to enable the attainment of functional objectives
- Analyses trends in the mining arena, assessing their possible impact on the mining strategy and takes appropriate action
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the mining strategy to meet the operation’s medium and long term plans
- Creates an enabling environment to motivate and encourage the search for and trial of new ideas and technologies to enhance and improve the mining processes and efficiencies
- Develops and sets mining production targets and standards for the mining operation’s team and monitors compliance
- Develops mining knowledge acquisition and application capability to ensure long term viability and growth of the mining processes and operations
- Develops systems and structures required for the identification of industry best practices for the adoption and maintenance of suitable mining procedures and standards
- Directs and coordinates the development of the mine’s operational plans to meet key objectives
- Identification and implementation of research and development projects and supporting skill development
- Manages and directs the deployment of resources to optimise the efficiency of the operation
- Initiates, monitors and controls short term projects to address challenges within functional sphere and ensures seamless interface with project functions for attainment of desired results
- Identifies, coordinates and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principles/requirements
- Coordinates & manages the Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility as well as compliance to the statutory requirements such as stipulated in the Mines, Works, Quarries and Machinery Act (MWQM)
Other Job Responsibilities
- Adheres to all safety health and environmental policies and procedures in areas of responsibility
- Implements sectional talent management initiatives by ensuring the right competence and effectiveness of manpower (capacity building) through developing and implementing career, localization /succession, training and development plans
- Manages subordinates’ key effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
- Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
- Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance
- Establishes and maintains Business Partner relationships with all key stakeholders to facilitate the optimal functioning of the medical section
Education
- Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
Experience
8 years post qualification mining experience of which 3 should have been at Mining Engineer level
Legal Certification/Professional Registration
- Open Pit Blasting License
- Membership of recognized Engineering Board/Body
