This position is responsible for monitoring the contractor’s compliance to the short-term plans, reviewing drill and blast performance

Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, this position is responsible for monitoring the contractor’s compliance to the short-term plans, reviewing drill and blast performance and compiling KPI reports for the effective operation of the Motheo Copper Mine.

Key Performance Areas

  • Ensure work is undertaken in line with the company HSE standards and legal requirements.
  • Regularly inspect the workplace for safe working practices.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of processes and systems for the mining department.
  • Auditing and enhancing contractor drill and blast QAQC performance.
  • Reviewing, approving, and optimizing contractor blast designs and timings.
  • Providing mentoring and support to the contractor drill and blast engineering team.
  • Provide operational and technical support for short term planning activities.
  • Ensure that the weekly plan is being followed in a safe and efficient manner by the contractor.
  • Conduct project design work (roads, waste dumps etc) and coordinate to ensure designs are properly implemented in the field.
  • Assist with reviewing, developing, and maintaining standard operating procedures for the mining department.
  • Reporting of end of month contractor production quantities and reviewing the monthly mining contract submission.
  • Assist with the coordination of pit dewatering requirements.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong analytical skills to assess opportunities and risks, and ability to develop actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in mine planning software Deswik & scheduling software Alastri
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office softwares
  • Working knowledge of the Botswana Mines, Quarries, Works & Machinery Regulations

  • Good communication skills to convey potentially complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Good planning & organising skills, the ability to coach / mentor engineers.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Mining from a recognised University
  • Registered with the Engineers Registration Board
  • Botswana Open Pit Blasting Licence
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in open pit mining engineering
