Summary
Responsible to the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH) and Member Countries technically, and administratively to the Head of R&D. The Manager is responsible for planning, managing, and coordinating the activities of the Reference Diagnostic Laboratory and activities of the WOAH in accordance with the Reference Laboratory guidelines and regulatory requirements; Leading and actively researching to assist the Reference Laboratory provide scientific, technical assistance and expert advice on topics linked to diagnosis and control of FMD.
Description
The incumbent will be responsible for among others the following;
- Organize, plan, coordinate and implement the activities of the Reference Diagnostic Laboratory in accordance with the WOAH rules for Reference Laboratories
- Contribute to the development of the research agenda and plan for the R&D department
- Contribute to the BVI integrated risk management framework
- Oversee diagnosis of FMD and vaccine matching studies on field samples
- Initiate Foot and mouth disease research activities designed to understand the epidemiology of the disease and for development of relevant vaccines and diagnostic test kits.
- Provide leadership of the Diagnostic Laboratory and ensure compliance with the WOAH rules and regulations.
- Prepare and present department budget for consideration by Head of Research and Development
Minimum Requirements
The right candidate will possess the following minimum requirements:
- A PhD in Veterinary and/or Biological Sciences.
- Membership with regional and International professional body(s) (veterinary; biological sciences,) as applicable.
- At least 5 years’ experience in diagnostic testing for FMD including working in laboratories.
- Evidence of published research on FMD in reputable periodicals or journals.
- Knowledge of serological, bacteriological, virological diagnostic techniques and competence
