Main purpose of the position
To supervise and control maintenance activities of transmission and distribution power lines in a safe, efficient, and effective manner to minimise interruption of supply.
Job Responsibilities
- Supervises the activities of the team to ensure that operational systems, procedures, and safety standards are always observed.
- Coordinates and controls the job card flow and ensures that all returned documentation, line patrol and inspection sheets are completed correctly and submitted timeously.
- Investigates, inspects, and documents all damages and defects on transmission and distribution lines and their servitudes.
- Draft and compile live line work procedures.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment and systems for emergency repairs.
- Performs maintenance inspections and assists specialists in setting up and testing new products/processes.
- Installs complex systems with guidance.
- Issues, receives, and cancels all safety documents in BPC.
- Plans and schedule monthly transmission and distribution lines repairs and maintenance activities.
- Tests and clean all line maintenance tools and equipment to ensure that they are in good condition prior to using them.
- Controls on-site repair and maintenance of transmission and distribution lines.
- Leads a team in deadline maintenance in accordance with laid down procedures.
- Troubleshoots on Transmission and Distribution network equipment and takes remedial action.
- Maintains 132kv monopole lines to avoid damage to equipment and to minimize interruption of supply.
- Tests live line tools to avoid damage to equipment and safeguard personnel.
- Tests anchor on guyed towers to prevent damage to equipment and to safeguard the public (tower falling).
- Punchers testing on live apparatus on 132kv lines 220kv lines 400kv lines for supply continuity.
- Inspects and reports/ raise defect Telecommunication pilot cables and joints that are on transmission towers and air crafts warning spheres installations.
- Maintains and repairs 66 KV lines for continuity of supply.
- Cleans and re-gloss of abraded Epoxiglass surface.
- Calibrates ladder leakage current monitor, rope tester and wet/dry hot stick tester as per the industry standards.
- Prepares and submits monthly operational reports timely.
- Dry cleans contaminants, corrosive salts, and industrial pollutants from insulators.
- Repairs conductors and line hardware.
- Maintains transmission and distribution lines servitudes
- Carries out operations, maintenance and testing properly in accordance with set policies and procedures to ensure restoration of equipment is completed within the prescribed times.
- Resolve customer and clients queries timely to ensure consistent power supply.
- Identifies shortcomings in existing live line work processes and procedures and recommend improvements.
- Disciplines staff in accordance with BPC procedures; and evaluates staff performance in line with the BPC appraisal system.
- Initiates in-house and external training for all staff under supervision.
- Support implementation of project in area of responsibility to ensure compliance to existing standards.
- Works on site with contractors during pre-energising, commissioning, and takeover of new to ensure that they conform to BPC’s standards and requirements.
- Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own
equipment and workspace. - Inspects team’s live line work protective clothing to ensure that they are suitable for use.
- Controls safety on site and housekeeping in the stores, workshop and vehicles.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent Plus
Recognised Live Line Work Certificate. - Senior Authorisation is compulsory up to 400kV
Must be registered with a recognized engineering professional body (ERB).
Experience
- At least six (6) years post qualification experience in the power environment.
- Design, construction of transmission and distribution line and HV experience in live line work and deadline work will be an added advantage.
