In its pursuit to become a Competitive Commercial Power Utility within the Region, Botswana Power Corporation invites applications from suitably qualified, highly energetic, dynamic, result oriented, innovative, and customer focused individuals, who believe they can be part of a great team that delivers power to Botswana to apply for the below listed position not later than 11th September 2024. 

Main purpose of the position

To control and supervise the day to day operations of the laboratories to ensure supply of properly treated oil, effective plant chemical conditioning and monitoring in accordance with approved oil treatment, laboratory, environmental and safety standards and procedures.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Carries out routine service maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical instructions, and diagnoses faults to ensure equipment availability and reliability.
  • Installs basic laboratory equipment
  • Works independently to collate and analyse data using pre-determined tools, methods and formats
  • Produces accurate reports for others by collecting data from a variety of standard sources and inputting that data into standard formats
  • Interprets results from on-line instrumentation and bench analyses and issues instructions for remedial adjustment to the plant; informs the supervisor on remedial action taken for effective and efficient plant chemistry control.
  • Implements the ground water pollution, and well fields (water balance) monitoring programme to insure data availability for review and approval by the supervisor.
  • Completes written reports and maintains logs to ensure there is a record of operational events and occurrences.
  • Provide preliminary Root Cause Analysis data.
  • Performs routine and non-routine analyses of the resins (ion exchange materials) to determine resin capacity and extent of deterioration, for decision making on resin performance.
  • Performs method validation and prepares analytical standards to maintain higher accuracy and precision of analytical methods to ensure compliance to laboratory standards.
  • Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.
  • Contributes to the development of risk assessments
  • Participates in safety inspections and reports on findings to maintain safety of personnel and good housekeeping of the plant.
  • Carries out on-the-job training in operation procedures and fault diagnosis in order to increase the flexibility and capability of the team.
  • Manages the motivation and discipline of staff in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives

Qualifications

A recognized Diploma in Chemistry or equivalent.
Must be authorized as a Competent Person (within 6 months for internal candidates and 12 months for external candidates from the commencement of training)

Experience

At least three (3) years post qualification should have been served in a Testing Laboratory environment

Experience of supervising and directing people to achieve specific results would be an added advantage.
