Main Purpose of the Role:

The HSE Manager is responsible for driving the implementation of the company’s health and safety processes and management systems to ensure a culture of excellent safety practises at PNRB sites. Develop and monitor implementation of control measures at the mine to enable reduction of risk, compliance to mine procedures, standards and legal requirements, aligned to best practice principles to enhance the safety management maturity of the operation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures Safety and Health non-compliance is identified and rectified in a timely manner.
  • Oversee compliance to safety legislation on implementation of projects and programmes at the operations to ensure the attainment of desired results.
  • Interprets, the PNRB safety programme and develops the mine’s safety strategy to ensure sustainability.
  • Developing and executing the development and implementation of the mine’s health and Safety Management System.
  • Evaluation of safety policies, procedures, standards, and practices to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and best practice guidance on safety management to operations.
  • Analyses development/trend and changes within and outside the wider group as well as changes in safety legislation and good practice and adapts the mine strategy and policies accordingly.
  • Evaluates, analyses, plans and coordinate the implementation of interventions to address emerging safety risks.
  • Develops and manages the implementation of safety training plans to ensure appropriate competency and awareness at the operations.
  • Manages subordinates’ key effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives.
  • Consults other managers, engineers and supervisors on matters relating to occupational / operational safety, occupational health and environmental management and provide guidance on risk reduction / control measures.
  • Enforcing compliance to HSE programs, policies and procedures to establish a culture of health and safety.
  • Ensures HSE internal audits are conducted for area of responsibility, develop recommendations for compliance and compile report on same. Follow up on recommendations to ensure implementation.
  • Respond to emergency situations and leads incident investigations to determine the root cause and closure.

Education, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent.
  • 8 years HSE experience, 3 of which should be at superintendent or management level in an underground mining environment.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001, Mines, Quarries Works and Machinery Act.
  • Working knowledge of safety management information systems is preferred
