Leadership of the Internal Audit Function:
- Develop and implement a risk-based internal audit plan.
- Lead, supervise, and mentor the internal audit team, fostering a culture of professional growth and ethical conduct.
- Ensure alignment of the internal audit strategy with the organization’s strategic goals and regulatory requirements.
2. Audit Execution and Reporting:
- Oversee the execution of audits across the institution’s various departments (e.g., finance, operations, compliance, IT, etc.).
- Ensure timely preparation and delivery of audit reports, presenting findings and recommendations to the board audit committee, executive management, and relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor the follow-up of audit recommendations to ensure issues are addressed effectively.
3. Risk Management and Control:
- Evaluate the institution’s risk management, governance, and internal control frameworks.
- Collaborate with senior management to identify potential risks and ensure proper mitigation strategies are in place.
- Provide advice on control issues, process improvements, and emerging risks.
4. Regulatory and Compliance Audits:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and standards.
- Coordinate with external auditors and regulators, ensuring the institution’s audit practices comply with statutory and professional standards.
- Oversee internal reviews and investigations into incidents of non-compliance or fraud.
5. Governance and Advisory Role:
- Act as a trusted advisor to the board of directors, audit committee, and executive management on matters related to governance, risk, and control.
- Contribute to policy development and corporate governance practices to strengthen the overall control environment.
- Participate in cross-functional governance and risk management committees within the organization.
6. Performance and Process Improvements:
- Lead initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness within the internal audit department.
- Develop and maintain internal audit methodologies, tools, and frameworks in line with industry best practices.
7. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Maintain strong working relationships with external auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and effective communication.
- Liaise with senior management to ensure internal audit services align with business needs and provide value.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Chartered Accountant is essential.
- Proven track record of leading and developing an internal audit team, preferably in a financial institution.
- Experience working with regulatory bodies and external auditors.
Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of internal audit standards, risk management frameworks, and governance principles.
- Familiarity with financial services industry regulations (e.g., Basel III, AML, SOX).
- Proficiency in audit software and data analytics tools to enhance audit effectiveness.
Other Qualifications:
- Strong business acumen and ability to understand and audit complex business processes.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and staying up to date with industry best practices and regulatory changes
Experience
- 10+ years (7 of which should have been in a senior leadership role) in credit management, including roles in credit assessment, evaluation, risk management, and collections.
- Proven track record in senior credit management roles with experience in leading and managing credit functions
