A member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting into the Executive Country Head – Botswana.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting into the Executive Country Head – Botswana, the General Manager Operations is directly responsible for delivery of the Motheo asset business plan, leading the asset management team to ensure achievement of the overall business plan, objectives, and targets.

A primary focus of the role will be developing and maintaining a responsive, progressive and cohesive operational culture with a key focus on safety, community, continuous improvement and technology optimisation.

Key Performance Areas

  • Aligned with Sandfire business requirements, develop and implement appropriate strategies, policies, procedures and standards in order to guide the development of operational activities for Motheo in the areas of mining, processing, geology, safety, community, administration and environmental management.
  • Develop and promote a working environment that is safe and healthy and protects the environment.
  • Actively Promote the Company’s “Don’t Walk Past” culture and philosophy.
  • Coordinate and prepare achievable annual budgets that are presented to the Asset President – Motheo, COO for review and approval.
  • Coordinate the preparation of monthly reports that compare actual results to budget against both physical and cost parameters.
  • Ensure operational targets are met or exceeded as per the Budget.
  • Evaluate any capital expenditure proposals specific to operations and prepare submissions to the Asset President – Motheo.
  • Approves and directs remedial programs to improve the development of the mine, operational performance, and technology, and engages and instructs external contractors where appropriate.
  • Optimise operational plans, structures, processes, and technology to underpin sophisticated, fit for purpose asset operations.
  • Ensure the development of tactical programs to pursue targeted business and asset objectives.
  • Promote and support a culture of continuous improvement where the operation will challenge itself in all areas and lead the change.
  • Build and empower your workforce to deliver the Motheo asset plan.
  • Mentor and manage site leaders ensuring a collaborative, inclusive and progressive operational culture.
  • Collaborate with the corporate business and technical services groups with respect to operational strategies.
  • Plan, evaluate and decide upon key investments in equipment, infrastructure, and talent.
  • Ensure operational activities comply with the business’ requirements for quality management, legal stipulations, and general duty of care.
  • Develop business plans by studying technological, operational, and financial opportunities, presenting assumptions and recommendations.
  • Ensure safety, quality, production and people objectives and targets are met to the highest of standards.
  • Plan and maintain systems and procedures for operating efficiency.
  • Provide technical support and coaching across the asset and broader business.
  • Maintain positive key stakeholder and community relationships as required ensuring high quality interfaces with regulatory and community networks and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement strategy, business objectives and full integration of value chain and business services.
  • Actively promote and demonstrates a culture of safety leadership and excellence across the operation.
  • Manage operational activities ensuring all personnel are adequately educated in the Motheo safety standards, systems, and processes to achieve operational objectives safely, with zero harm to personnel and the Company’s reputation.
  • Interact with personnel at all levels demonstrating open communication and a high level of honesty, integrity, professionalism, and leadership.
  • Provide guidance to the operations management team actively promoting professional development and positive employee relations.

Technical Competencies

  • Competent to be the appointed Registered Manager

Qualification & Experience

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or other relevant technical mining discipline (Geology Chemical, Metallurgy or Mechanical) and business qualification i.e. MBA desirable.
  • Registered with the Engineer’s Registration board.
  • Large Open Pit mining experience essential
  • 20+ years’ experience in the mining industry
  • 10 years + experience in senior manager capacity, at asset level, leading multi-disciplinary teams.
