Purpose of the Role

Provides guidance on implementation of environmental management programmes to the operation in line with S&SD strategy, management plans and procedures aligned to best practice principles to enhance the environmental management maturity of the operation.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Interprets environmental programme and develops the mines environmental strategy to ensure sustainability.
  • Coordinates the implementation of safety policies, standards, and practices to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, to attain and maintain international certification
  • Analyses development/trend and changes within and outside the wider group as well as changes in safety legislation and good practice and adapts the mine strategy and policies accordingly
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of the mine’s environmental management system (EMS).
  • Coordinates the management of waste management facilities and implementation of waste reduction/recycling programs.
  • Audits and reports on environmental and sustainability performance to internal clients and collaborates with the group environmental leadership team on sustainability reporting issues as they relate to external clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinates the management of the Game Park by appointing and directing operational staff, balancing resource requirements with commercial opportunities. assessing and overseeing research by internal or external interested parties.
  • Develops and coordinates the implementation of the Game Park management plan taking cognizance of the relevant legislation, government policy and community interests.
  • Coordinates development and implementation of the Biodiversity Action Plans.
  • Oversee compliance to safety legislation on implementation of projects and programmes at the operations to ensure the attainment of desired results
  • Plays an active role in the value chain of the operation to ensure proactive identification of environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and best practice guidance on environment and biodiversity management to Debswana
  • Identifies, coordinates and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principles/requirements in area of responsibility
  • Develops and manages the implementation of environmental management training plans to ensure appropriate competency and awareness at the operations.
  • Manages subordinates key effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
  • Identifies and coordinates the implementation of relevant research, projects or technology related to the management of safety hazards as defined in the Debswana Technology road map
  • Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Establishes and maintains effective relational with key stakeholder and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives

Education

  • Degree in Environmental Management

Experience

6 years post qualification environmental management experience in mining or similar environment including exposure to environmental management system implementation, sustainability risk management, translating sustainability management principles into practical standards, processes and guidelines for projects management.
