Purpose of the Role

The Energy & Carbon Manager provides a technical service in energy and climate change management. The role is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring energy and climate change management programmes and ensures integration into business planning and procurement decisions. This involves developing and communicating programmes, specifications and standards that will ensure reduction of energy intensity, replacement of fossil fuel, replacement of fossil electricity, carbon recovery, carbon offsets, scope 3 emissions, climate change risks, adaptation and resilience strategies. In addition, the role is responsible for creating awareness on energy and climate change management through training, information sharing and continuous reporting to management to keep the business up-to-date with best practice and global trends in the industry

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Interprets financial needs for energy and climate change management solutions to ensure the availability of adequate financial resources to meet business objectives
  • Prioritises climate change mitigation and adaptation opportunities to ensure budget compliance in the delivery of appropriate solutions
  • Guides business in analysing business processes, identifying opportunities for managing climate change risk and deploying best-fit climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions
  • Provide advice to business functions on opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy intensity of business processes
  • Conducts energy opportunity scoping, designs, models, simulations, to optimize the energy usage by business functions and projects
  • Develops, oversees, and drives the implementation of energy and climate change management programmes for the operation or project
  • Establishes baselines and develops pathways
  • Coordinates the development, adaption, or adoption of energy and GHG reduction targets
  • Drives consolidated action plans for the achievement of targets
  • Guides cross-functional teams in the collaborative development of business cases for energy and climate change management initiatives and projects
  • Acts as an energy custodian for the operation and communicates, creates awareness and educates stakeholders on energy and climate change management
  • Develops and establishes energy maps, energy forecasts and carbon footprint for the operation
  • Co-creates and drives the identification and implementation of energy and climate change management initiatives and projects
  • Deploys and maintains a system for real time view of energy information and coordinates load curtailment and immediate response to blackout situations
  • Establishes an optimal energy measurement, verification, and reporting process
  • Drives the integration of energy and climate change management requirements into business plans and procurement decisions
  • Drives the embedment of energy efficiency into project design
  • Guides project teams in the incorporation of energy & climate change requirements for equipment selection and procurement decisions
  • Guides project teams in the development, testing, deployment, and sustenance of energy solutions
  • Initiates, monitors and controls energy and climate management projects to ensure attainment of desired results
  • Oversees the implementation of energy and climate change management work packages within major projects
  • Scouts for new technology and best practice
  • Drives standardization across the operation
  • Develops and implements systems to ensure energy and GHG data integrity and deploys appropriate assurance tools and mechanisms
  • Ensures that specifications, codes of practice, standards, operating procedures, legal and statutory requirements are adhered to
  • Develops, directs, coaches, mentors, and reinforces development team members in line with the mission, vision, values, goals, and performance standards for the different energy and climate change initiatives
  • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships and collaborations with key stakeholders to ensure achievement of business objectives
  • Aligns stakeholders and creates awareness and understanding of energy and climate change management across the operation
  • Manages and coordinates the implementation of safety, health and environmental programme in area of responsibility

Other Job Responsibilities

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Management, or Equivalent Technical Discipline

Experience

  • 8 years post qualification experience
  •  Experience with conducting and managing feasibility studies for energy management and conservation solutions
  •  Experience with evaluation of processes and systems for energy optimization
  •  Mining background is advantageous
  •  Good understanding of the total mining value chain is advantageous
  • Business analysis, business process analysis, and/or systems analysis.
  •  Translating business requirements into functional and technical specifications
