Main purpose of the position

To implement, monitor, and supervise the day-to-day maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, it’s protection, control and monitoring equipment/schemes in accordance with the set specifications, standards and safety procedures to ensure optimal plant availability through accurate and reliable operation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support for efficient and effective installation, commission, maintenance and repair of electrical plant protection schemes in accordance with procedures to ensure plant availability and safety
  • Install and commission electrical equipment together with its protection and control equipment in accordance with specifications and schematic diagrams.
  • Carries-out repair works and rectifies protection and control equipment defects to minimise equipment down time and ensure speedy restoration of supply.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance (primary injection tests, secondary injection tests, CT tests, VT tests and cleaning etc.) of protection and control equipment in accordance with laid down standard procedures.
  • Maintains an inventory of all protection and control equipment spares and ensures that required spares are ordered on time.
  • Conducts periodic inspection of protection equipment in Power station and makes preliminary reports on the status of the protection and control gear.
  • Performs fault analysis and diagnosis to determine the nature and location of the faults
  • Monitor small and medium scale projects as directed by Supervisor by working within an established project management plan.
  • Maintains systems documentation and drawings to ensure that they are up to date and in good order
  • Carries out switching operations in accordance with BPC safety procedures to ensure safe working environment.
  • Implement sectional budget & initiate cost saving measures in area of responsibility.
  • Motivates and disciplines of Artisans and Artisan Assistants in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives
  • Proposes and implements developmental plans for subordinates to ensure competent, efficient, and motivated staff
  • Trains technical personnel to ensure skills development and skills transfer for business continuity
  • Collects and collates disturbances records and settings from all Protection and control equipment for system performance monitoring and evaluation.
  • Compiles periodic systems performance reports in area of responsibility
  • Identifies protection and control equipment and assets and recommends for replacement and disposal
  • Prepares requisitions to purchase protection equipment/tool and make follow up on payments of suppliers with supply chain and finance departments.
  • Operates in accordance with policies and rules, while performing routine safety checks on own equipment and workspace.
  • Promotes safety awareness in line with SHER requirements through periodic audits.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or equivalent.
  • Must be Registered with ERB
  • Class B Drivers Licence is required
  • For Internal Candidates, must obtain Senior Authorisation up to 33kV in six(6) months, & for external candidates in twelve (12) months

Experience

  • Two (2) years’ experience in protection, control, and maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Experience working in a power plant environment would be an added advantage.
  • Supervisory experience would be an added advantage.
