 In its pursuit to become a Competitive Commercial Power Utility within the Region, Botswana Power Corporation invites applications from suitably qualified, highly energetic, dynamic, result oriented, innovative, and customer focused individuals, who believe they can be part of a great team that delivers power to Botswana to apply for the below listed position not later than 11th September 2024.

Main purpose of the position

To operate, control and monitor the operations of the power generating units and its auxiliaries to ensure safe and efficient generation of power in accordance with standard procedures and Safety Health and Environmental standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operates, control and monitors the steam boilers, turbine generators and equipment, prioritizing routine tasks to improve efficiency and adjusting multiple related variables to resolve production problems, in accordance with operating procedures, safety standards and code of practice.
  • Performs operational standing instructions, such as emergency protection devices tests and cut-in tests (for fire pumps and emergency generators) to ensure reliability/availability of emergency facilities to minimise the risk of failure.
  • Supervises the activities of operators to ensure that operational systems, procedures, and safety standards are observed at all times.
  • Carries out spot plant inspection checks and monitors operating status to ensure effective condition of plant equipment and machinery.
  • Identifies and diagnoses faults and defects and takes appropriate action / reports major faults and breakdowns.
  • Works independently to collate and analyse data using pre-determined tools, methods, and formats
  • Produces accurate reports for others by collecting data from a variety of standard sources and inputting that data into standard formats
  • Provides preliminary data for Root Cause Analyses.
  • Works within strict quality standards and procedures, following specified inputs and outputs parameters.
  • Carries out prescribed internal client management activities and provides technical support to others by following existing procedures.
  • Identifies shortcomings in existing processes, systems, and procedures, then uses established change management programs to deliver prescribed outcomes and/or provide support services
  • Supports project managers by performing allocated tasks and following established procedures.
  • Carries out on-the-job training in operation procedures and fault diagnosis to increase the flexibility and capability of the team.
  • Manages the motivation and discipline of staff in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives
  • Manages the performance of the team by working within a performance management system.
  • Operates in accordance with policies and Procedures, while performing routine safety checks on equipment and workspace.
  • Contributes to the development of risk assessments
  • Participates in safety inspections and reports on findings to maintain safety of personnel and good housekeeping of the plant.

Qualifications

  • A recognized Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Must be Junior Authorised within 6 months from date of appointment and be Senior Authorised within 12 months from date of appointment.
  • Must be registered with the Engineers Registration Board.
  • A valid Class B Driver’s license.

Experience

  • At least three (3) years post qualification with Power Plant experience.
  • Experience of supervising and directing people to achieve specific results will be an added advantage.
