Purpose of the Role

To inspect the workmaship, quality an safety of work on construction site and report to the Engineer/Construction Manager/ Project Manager. The COW will conduct routine inspections on all ongoing works and ensure that it is all in accordance with the latest issued construction drawinga and applicable standards. Ensure that work is carried out to correct specifications, legal, safety and environmental standards.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Ensures that work is carried out according to budget
  • Coordinates, monitors and inspects the work of the construction contractor
  • Examine specifications and drawings and ensure that any aspects which are not satisfactory are rectified
  • Highlight possible conflicts and contradictory information on the drawing specifications to the Engineer pro-actively
  • Review contractor’s shop drawings and provide comments on conformance or non-conformance to the Engineer
  • Attending and witness tests as per the construction project requirements, can reject or accept the results based on the target value and agreed deviations
  • There is a need for COW to confirm non-compliance of results with the Engineer before a substantive rejection is issued on high value items
  • Identifying defects and suggesting corrective measures in agreement with the Engineer
  • Monitor progress and reporting to the Engineer/Construction Manager/Project Manager
  • Keep detailed accurate records of work such as daily logs of on-site activities including weather conditions, nature and location of work being performed, available resources including equipment and persons deployed by the contractor
  • Referring to construction drawings, photography of work progress, measurements and samples records
  • Liaison with Surveyors, Engineers, SHE personnel and Contractors on site
  • Work between Office and Site
  • Monitor compliance to traffic management plans
  • Check setting out and survey profiles to ensure accuracy
  • Escalate issues beyond him/her to the Engineer for expeditious resolution
  • COW must ensure that the Commissioning certificates from C1 – C5 are signed accordingly at relevant stages
  • For any onsite changes, create redlined drawings and eventually work with the draughtsman to produce as-built drawings where necessary. As-built drawings must be prepared and issued to the Debswana Drawings Office and Document Control at the project end
  • Inspect finished work, prepare schedules of, and supervise, remedial works and provide completion certificates of work. Schedule snagging items and defects at practical completion and at the end of the defect’s liability period
  • Inspect Construction work and ensure compliance with issued construction drawings and specifications
  • Confirm accuracy of delivery notes and check quality of construction materials as they are delivered and stored on site

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Working in a Mining environment experience is an added advantage
  • Knowledge of civil engineering infrastructure construction such as bulk earthworks, structural steel installations, concrete works etc
  • Land Survey knowledge – understanding thereof
  • Good interpersonal skills/customer service skills
  • Ability to initiate patience and remain calm in stressful situations
  • High safety mindset and attitude
  • Ability to analyse quality or performance
  • Understanding of construction schedule and follow it to track progress onsite
  • Understanding and awareness of applicable construction standards and technical specifications for civil and structural works
  • Adheres to all safety health and environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility
  • Ensuring compliance to Debswana ECOHS, Debswana Site Rules and Regulations, Legal Requirements

Education

  • Diploma in Technician Diploma in Building and Construction

Experience

A minimum of 5 Years experience in Civil Engineering works as Inspector of the Works (COW) Must be proficient in MS Office Suite
