Purpose of the Role

Charges and assists the Team Lead in blasting activities in accordance with the Mine standards and legal requirements

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Dermacates mining faces, drill sites and blasting sites
  • Measures and records drilled holes to ensure that they are of the required depth and takes corrective action where necessary
  • Prepares and positions primers as required for blasting and charges rocks for secondary blasting
  • Measures the height of the explosive charge in the hole to ensure that the correct amount of explosive has been pumped down the hole and ensures the correct amount of stemming is placed between the bottom and top charge if there is decking charge
  • Guards against inadvertent entry to locations where explosives are kept and ensures that entry is only granted when all legal requirements are met
  • Loads and offloads explosives to charging and storage areas
  • Removes all breakable mine property from the vicinity of the blasting site
  • Operates the blast hole filler (backhoe excavator) to stem blasting holes

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets and controls expenditure within approved parameters.
  • Adheres to all safety, health and environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility

Education

  • O Level

Experience

3 year experience in a mining environment
